Young People’s Continental Congress 2024
WHERE FUTURE AND PAST MEET
2024 marks the 250th anniversary of the First Continental Congress. This colonial convening was one of the most significant events in the founding of our nation, as delegates from the American colonies came together in Carpenters’ Hall to discuss their grievances with Great Britain and solidify a united American identity. The delegates adopted a Declaration of Colonial Rights, which outlined their issues with Great Britain and laid the groundwork for the Second Continental Congress and the Declaration of Independence.
To commemorate the 250th anniversary of the First Continental Congress in 1774 and the start of the Second Continental Congress in 1774, the Carpenters’ Company, the nonprofit organization founded in 1724 that owns and operates Carpenters’ Hall, will collaborate with national partners National History Day and Generation Citizen and a network of history and civic organizations in Philadelphia to convene the Young People’s Continental Congress(YPCC).
YPCC is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for participants and an ideal springboard for the celebration of the Semiquincentennial of American independence in 2026.
What will the student delegates’ experience in Philadelphia look like?
For five days in July 2024, high school students and their teachers from the 13 original colonies will gather in Philadelphia to explore the history of our nation’s founding and discuss contemporary issues of democracy and social justice. The student delegates will attend daily meetings in Carpenters’ Hall, as well as visit Independence Hall, the Museum of the American Revolution, the National Constitution Center, and the Historical Society of Pennsylvania.
Stay Tuned for 2025!
A second convening will occur in July 2025, this time with students and teachers from all 56 U.S. states and jurisdictions.
